Whether you are a gardener or a homeowner, weeds are public enemy number one. No matter what you do, it seems these annoying plants always find a way back into you yard. Weeds are stubborn and can cost you hours and money that could be spent on things you enjoy. Luckily for you, we have found some summer weed control tips for South Carolina lawns to help you defend your yard from weeds this year.

Nip Them In The Bud

Getting a head start on weed control is the most important step you can do to prevent weeds from becoming a problem. Weeds are annual plants which means they disperse their seeds in the fall and then die. These seeds lay in your soil until spring arrives and then they germinate. You can nip them in the bud by applying pre-emergent herbicides that prevent the seeds from germinating. Note that this method only works on seeds, not mature plants.

Healthy Lawns Are Weedless Lawns

Weeds may seem like they can grow anywhere but they need two things to germinate; sunlight and warm temperatures. If you have a thin and lackluster lawn with bare spots, then this is an open invitation for weeds. If you follow a regular watering and fertilization schedule like Coastal Turf’s lawn care program, you can cultivate a thick and healthy lawn. The lush grass blocks sunlight from reaching the soil where seeds lie in wait, preventing them from germinating.

Mulch

To keep weeds out of your flower gardens and around your trees, apply a few inches of mulch. Mulch works by blocking sunlight so seeds don’t have a chance to get established. Drip irrigation systems will allow you to water your plants, not the weeds, and is an excellent summer weed control method.

Don’t Water The Weeds

The problem with using a sprinkler in your garden is that you aren’t just watering your tomatoes, you’re also watering the weeds. Watering with an old fashioned watering can, like grandma used to do, can be a real pain, especially if you have a large garden. Luckily there are some neat ways to water your plants without watering the weeds.

  • Drip Irrigation: Drip irrigation works by running a hose through your garden with holes punched in it at different intervals that only water the plants. You can make them yourself or buy them online.
  • Flower Pot Method: This is a really neat way to water your plants without watering weeds. All you need is a clay flower pot without holes. Dig a hole in your garden and place the pot inside so just a few inches stick up. Plant your vegetables around the pot. When you add water to the flower pot it soaks through the clay and leaches into the soil, watering your plants but not the weeds!
  • Bucket Method: This is the same as the flower pot method but, instead, you use a 5-gallon bucket with holes drilled around the bottom. Be sure to cover you bucket or flower pot with something so mosquitoes don’t use it to lay eggs.
